The members of Ravens Roost 73 have been very busy since our last newsletter. Just read on to find out more!
ATLANTIC CITY BUS TRIP
Well, another hot day in the neighborhood and what better way to spend it than to take a trip to a nice cool casino. RR 73 had a full bus heading to Resorts Casino in Atlantic City on August 22nd for a fun filled day of gaming, shopping or just plain sightseeing. Bridgette, our wonderful entertainment chairperson, served as our Tour Director and members and friends enjoyed some pre-AC fun by playing bingo on the ride up.
Our second Longaberger Basket Bingo was held on September 18th at the Rockaway Beach Volunteer Fire Hall. We had 150 folks in attendance playing 25 games for a chance to win a much sought after Longaberger themed basket filled with lots of great prizes. This turned out to be another successful fund raiser for our group, which brought in $674.00 and left many folks quite happy with their take for the evening. Mark did a wonderful job as our caller. Thanks Mark!
MEMBERS CRAB FEAST
We had 40 members at Lenny’s on September 19th to enjoy perfectly seasoned steamed crabs from the Salty Dog. The menu also included crab soup, corn on the cob, hotdogs with all the fixins and lots of desserts. After feasting on the delicious crabs, members played a friendly game of ladderball, compliments of Debbie Kale. It was an enjoyable day and one of the many perks of being a member of RR 73.
On October 4th, 120 members and friends packed Laidback Lenny’s for our 5th Tailgate Party. The Ravens were not as successful as our Roost that day, losing to the Patriots, but we raised $1,754.00 for our causes. It was another job well done by our members. Thanks to our kitchen crew who were at Lenny’s bright and early on the Saturday before to help prepare the wonderful feast we enjoyed.
Dancing to the sounds of FOG, 150 members, family and friends joined together at the UAW Hall on Old Ham Street for our 3rd Annual Shrimp Feast on October 10th. It was a delightful evening of delicious food yet again, and some very cool Raven’s memorabilia being raffled off. We added another $2,407.50 to our treasury which will be used to support our many charities. Thanks to all the members who supported this event.
SUSAN G KOMEN WALK
Our 5th year for having a team to walk for this very worthy cause was another great success. We had 17 folks who registered, with 14 actual walkers and 2 runners. It was a dreary, cold and rainy day, but that did not put a damper on our enthusiasm and spirit for supporting this fundraiser. We had steaming coffee, hot chocolate and delicious donuts to get us started at the 6:00 a.m. meeting time J Our group raised $3,242 in the process and afterwards, enjoyed a nice warm lunch back at Lenny’s. Thanks again Len for the delicious tomato soup and turkey sandwiches. Frank even sang the “turkey sandwich” song all the back to Lenny’s.
E. I. O. Food Pantry
At our general meeting on December 7th, we had a guest speaker from one of our local food banks. Ms. Merle Bolger who volunteers at the EIO Food Pantry on Orville Road in Essex, told us a little bit about their organization. Our president, Lenny Banack presented Ms. Bolger with a check for $500.00 and we also collected several boxes of canned goods and other non-perishables for the pantry. It is nice to know that this food pantry serves families in need right here in our community.
SHOP WITH A COP
On a very cold, very early Saturday morning in December, members Terri Schaefer, Gail Weaver and Debbie Webber joined fellow rooster Terry McQuaid at the Essex precinct to kick off the Shop with A Cop for 2009. RR 73 again donated $500.00 to provide 5 children with a shopping spree at the WalMart in Hunt Valley. This is our 6th year supporting this program. One little girl sure looks happy.
40 members of Ravens Roost 73 started the holiday season off in style on December 12th, with a Christmas Party at Laidback Lenny’s. The drinks flowed and the food was delicious as always. Members got lots of laughs with the Chinese gift exchange and one highlight of the evening was Kathy Sweeney’s table of sweet treats. A great time was definitely had by all. We would like to extend many thanks to the committee for another wonderful party.
Bonnie is one of the newest members of our Roost and already she has been active in helping with several of our events. Merv Eurice and her joined the Roost together. She tells us she joined the Roost to be with other Raven’s fans, to watch the away games with everyone and to go on the Ocean City trip and help with the float.
Bonnie is the mother of 6 kids – all adults now. Four of them are married and have blessed her with 10 grandchildren. Bonnie is a cook at Perry Hall Middle School. She raised her kids in Harford County and has now lived in Essex for about 8 years. Merv and her enjoy boating and jetskiing in the summer. They like to have cookouts and get togethers to watch football. She also loves to tailgate before home games. She is joint owner of some season tickets and goes to about 5 or 6 home games each season.
Bonnie’s favorite player is Todd Heap.
Next time you see Bonnie (and Merv) up at LBL’s for a game or a Roost meeting, make sure you take a minute to introduce yourself and welcome them to our Roost.
